Under The Sea Layout with Reverse Stenciling and Dylusions with Karla Yungwirth

Hello friends! Karla here today with a fun summer layout using the fabulous Southern Ridge Mermaid Mix Chipboard Set and the Fish Net Stencil. These were perfect to pair with my beachy pics from a recent camping trip to Little Bow Provincial Park in Alberta! Be sure to watch the video linked at the bottom of the post to see exactly how I put it together with the help of my lovely assistant, my 12 year old daughter Amie!

I used the negative image of the stencil by spritzing Dylusions Ink on my craft mat, dipping the stencil in, and then laying it on my background and diecut circle. This stencil is so cool! I kept the layout title simple by covering it with a layer of Tattered Angels Chalk Mist for a translucent glimmer.

There are 18 awesome images in the Mermaid Mix chipboard set – and they are cut so fine and detailed! We decided to paint the silhouettes with Dylusions paints, which are bright and fun – matching the summer vibe and those colourful towels and beach floaties.

We added some more colour with ink splatters and painted more fish, shells and the wonderful seahorse.

Traveler's Journal with Cathy Potosky

Happy September everyone! I'm not saying fall yet, a few more days of summer is okay with me now that it's not 35 degrees here.

My project is a travelers journal, using the Eileen Hull die. This one is going to a friend with some inserts I created.

I started by spraying my cover (and my desk, phone etc) with Dylusions sprays and a Prima Bloom colour for the shimmer. When that was dry I stenciled in white and hickory smoke using a couple of TH stencils. I found a piece of canvas in my stash, stenciled that in Dylusions paint to add a pocket on the inside of my cover. I moved all those aside to dry.

I pulled out my SRTC chipboard pieces and got them ready for the cover. I used the small and medium size from the  Dandelion Seed Stems set. I embossed the flower part with Emerald Creek Soft Fallen Snow and did the stems with Finnabair Wax in Emerald.

Using the Dylusions Calypso Teal I painted my Barbed Wire Heart Frame and prepped my butterfly from the Butterfly Swirl Combo and covered it with mixed media medium, waited for it to be tacky then foiled it in blue.

Now that all my pieces were ready and dry, I could put all my items on my journal.

I attached my dandelion pieces first because I wanted them to be my focal point. I then added a few rub ons, a couple of stamped images and I set a little brad into melted embossing powder.

I love the dandelions. And the sparkle from the Soft Fallen Snow was just the right touch. On my inside pocket I attached my barbed wire heart with Glossy Accents so it would hold well on the fabric.

On the back cover I attached a glassine envelope to hold little bits in. I wanted the tab to stay "closed" so I attached my foiled butterfly to it. Pretty touch and just enough to keep the flap down.

And one last close up, my dandelions!

Top Hat with Cathy Potosky

Happy June everyone! Hope the month has been treating you all well and you're ready for the summer. And in the summer, it's a good idea to wear a hat to keep that sun off your head.

With that in mind, my project this month features the Top Hat as the base. It's one of my favourite pieces and you can dress it up in so many ways.

I used collage medium and TH Correspondence paper as my base layer and then embossed the whole hat with the Baked Texture Vintage Beeswax. I then went back over it with different Baked Texture Embossing Powders for some more layers. After it was completely cooled, I added mixed media medium with a stencil and once it was tacky, I foiled it with Champagne foil from DecoArt.

Once I had my base ready I started adding my colour to my other pieces. I used 1 of the Butterfly Mix and 2 pieces from the Butterfly Swirl Combo

On one butterfly I covered it with white gesso before I added Ken Oliver's Liquid Metals for colour, on the second butterfly I used the Liquid Metals straight on the chipboard and I love the bit more muted colour I got. 

Another one of my favourite pieces is the butterfly swirl. This piece was painted with Dylusions, Finnabair Wax and Liquid Metals.

I used Glossy Accents to attach my butterflies. Once they were in place I added the TH quote chip and a few TH Baubles that I dyed with alcohol ink.

Heart Felt Tag with Dylusions by Karen Bearse

Hello Karen Bearse here today with a fun, inky heart felt tag. Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and this is the perfect attachment for your present, or to go on your scrapbook page or in your art journal.  With a few simple techniques you can make your loved ones a tag or make a card.

This bright and cheery tag has a picture of my kids when they were younger. I started this with a few product ideas and went from there.

Dylusions are a bright, highly pigmented acrylic paint with a rich smooth finish. The Mixed Media Tags are the perfect surface to work on. The large tags size #10 are 8.5” tall which allows for lots of fun. I wanted to play with the Southern Ridge Trading Co. stencils, chippies and maybe some sprays.

Start by picking up a pea size amount of paint with a baby wipe, a little goes a long way. Smooth the paint, in this case Bubblegum, over the tag. Excess paint can be wiped on another tag or a wipe off journal.

Choose a second colour and using a cosmetic foam and a small amount of paint (Squeezed Orange) dab through a SRTC stencil (6x6 Rain Drop).

Repeat with a 3rd colour (crushed grape) and a different stencil (6x6 Fish Net). The beauty of this paint is it dries quickly, the colours work well together and each layer is vibrant. I used the heart chippie as a stencil & spritzed with Dylusions sprays in White Linen. This spray colour is unique & has a metal ball in it that needs to be shaken well for best use. Once the white was dry I spritzed again over the heart chippie in Crushed Grape.

I liked the look of the spray so added more using the small 3x3 X stencil. Once this is nice and dry doodling is a great way to go. I achieved this by simply outlining the shapes & adding some marks here & there. I did add more stencil work with Vibrant Turquoise paint & the 3x3 4 leaf clover stencil. I love the pop of this colour and carried it through the rest of the tag.

Time for some chippies!! First up was one of the gear chips which was simply painted with the turquoise paint and distressed with the pink. The heart charm was painted with gesso as a foundation & than painted with the pink. Love how this looks. These were adhered through the tag hole.

Emboss the Tanessha Heart. Use the paint to adhere the emboss powder. I did this in sections, painting each section with different colours as in the photos, than sprinkling some Silvester Kracher on letting some of the paint show through. Black Marble, Bubble Pink & gesso. Trim your photo to fit & adhere underneath the heart. Adhere your favourite word to the heart.

Let’s add flowers. The beauty of making a tag with these techniques is the ability to customize any flowers to match. Simply spritz white flowers with water & dab on same Dylusions Sprays that were used on the background. Each flower got it’s own colour & was sprinkled with a bit of Charred Gold Emboss powder & heat set. This gave the flowers depth & a grungy look.

The final touch was a small tag, altered using the same paint techniques & colours, with my title attached. Adding dots around the tag gave it that extra something. I hope you enjoyed my tutorial & try it out on either a tag, card or art journal page.

Winter Canvas

I'am back on the blog today to feature another "Winter" inspired project . There is still six days left to enter your "winter" piece into our Monthly Challenge. For all of the details, head here. For my post today,  I created a winter canvas.

Supplies Used: Ranger/Tim Holtz - Ground Expresso Distress Ink, Distress Crackle Paint - Clear Rock Candy. Ranger/Dylusions - Dylusions Paint: White Linen. Sizzix/Tim Holtz - Holiday Words: Block. Tim Holtz Ideaology - 6x8 Burlap Panel. Emerald Creek - Iridescent Shimmer  & Soft Fallen Snow Embossing Powder. Viva Decor - Inka Gold: Old Gold & Brown Gold. Tsukineko/Imagine Crafts - VersaMark. Bo Bunny Sleigh Ride - Blizzard, Logs & Tradition. Bazzill Cardstock - Java. May Arts Twine - White.

To begin, I prepped the background of my burlap panel, using a blending tool and inking 1/2" in around all the edges of the panel. Once the edges were inked, I sprinkled Soft Fallen Snow Embossing Powder around all four edges and embossed them. 

Once the background of the panel was finished, I set it aside and started working on the Cedar Trees. I covered all three cedar trees with Brown Gold Inka Gold. Once the Inka Gold was dry, I covered each cedar tree with a layer of Clear Rock Candy Distress Crackle paint and set them aside to dry.

Once the cedar trees were drying, I moved on to the Plain Banners. I covered the three plain banners with Old Gold Inka Gold. Once all three banners were covered, I applied a layer Clear Rock Candy Distress Crackle Paint over top and set them aside to dry.

I wanted to add something to the plain banners, so I pulled out my stash of Mini Wood Snowflakes. Before embossing the snowflakes, I painted them with a layer of Dylusions Paint in White Linen. Once the paint was dry, I covered them in a layer of VersaMark and then sprinkled Soft Fallen Snow Embossing Powder overtop of them and embossed them. 

For the finishing touches on my winter canvas, I added two layers of patterned paper from Bo Bunny's Sleigh Ridge Collection. I also wanted to add the word "winter" somewhere on my canvas, so I cut it out using the Tim Holtz/Sizzix - Holiday Words: Block die, attaching it to the top of my photo. For the last of the finishing touches, I added some Iridescent Shimmer Embossing Powder to parts of the edges of the patterned paper.

Hello, welcome to one of my favorite times of the year, Halloween!  I love all the ghouls, goblins and all things spooooookkkkyyyyy!  So I have chosen to do a canvas of a spooky halloween scene.  All the chipboard is from Southern Ridge Trading Co.  If you play along at the SRTC Blog Challenge you could win a $20 shopping spree at the Southern Ridge Trading Co shop!  It is the perfect challenge,  Fall!  Hope you play along for a chance to win some wonderful product.

Soooooo here is the project I did, started with a wooden frame, painted it with white gesso then turned it around to make a shadow box type frame for my scene.  Here is my layout before I got started.

I used black acrylic paint first and covered the frame then added Dylusions paint by Ranger with my fingers and just smeared it.   The colours I used were crushed grape, lemon zest, black marble, squeezed orange and white linen.  Then I added Old Silver Inka Gold to give it a distressed look.

I added Dylusions White Linen paint to the spider web and squeezed orange to the fence.  I added Black Sand Texture Paste from Finnabair, Art Extra Vagance, for the ground, black marble Dylusions paint to the trees and DecoArt-Snow Tex to the house.

I used lemon zest Dylusions paints for the moon and added glass and metal beads to the center.

I filled the littles bottles with fake blood and Dylusions cut grass paint and water for my blood and gooooo!  I added the little skull and bones I purchased from the dollar store.  The little bottles themselves are from Tim Holtz.  I used pop up springs for cards that I purchased from Close to My Heart, so the bat would pop about.  The bat and the ghosts are painted with Dylusions black marble and white linen paints.  The Keep out take is from the Dollar store.

I added the black cloth mesh, flours and orange embellies from my stash.

Finally I added cut grass and squeezed orange Dylusions paint on the sentiment and cut grass on the  house.  Voila, my spooky scene, hope you enjoy and thanx for stopping by.  See you next time.
