Adventure Scrapbook Layout with Katelyn Grosart

Hey Southern Ridge Trading Company fans, Katelyn here. It's hard to believe that November is here and it's time for me to start thinking about creating my Christmas Cards. For today's post though, I've created this Adventure Scrapbook Layout which features a variety of our popular chipboard pieces. You'll want to read below as I share with you how I embellished the chipboard elements for my layout.

To start, you'll need both of the Swirl Corners #2. Apply Emboss It Ink to the entire surface of each corner. Sprinkle Weathered Wood embossing powder over top of each corner. Tap off the excess powder and emboss with a heat tool. 

Next, you'll need the large frame from the Abstract Frame Set. Apply Emboss It Ink to the entire surface of each corner. Sprinkle Midnight Black embossing powder over top of each corner. Tap off the excess powder and emboss with a heat tool. 

Take the Adventure Word out of the package. Apply Emboss It Ink to the entire surface of each corner. Sprinkle Gun Metal embossing powder over top of each corner. Tap off the excess powder and emboss with a heat tool. 

Next you'll need the small cedar tree from the Cedar Trees package. Apply two coats of Walnut Stain Distress Paint to the bottom of the cedar tree. Apply two coats of Pine Needles Distress Paint to the top half of the cedar tree. 

The last chipboard element you'll need is a chipboard tag. Trace the tag around a piece of coordinating patterned paper.  

Adhere the patterned paper tag to the chipboard tag. Ink the edges of the chipboard tag using Black Soot Distress Ink.

Once the patterned papers have been layered together, adhere one swirl corner to the left of the banner element. Adhere the patterned papered chipboard tag to the right of the banner element.

The other swirl corner is adhered in the top left side of the banner element and then the other patterned papers are layered over top of the corners.

The abstract frame gets adhered over the photo. The cedar tree gets adhered to the bottom left of the abstract frame.

Once the border strips were adhered, adhere the adventure word to the right of the frame using adhesive and foam squares.

Adventure - Hiking in Elkwater with Charlene Byrd

Charlene here! I can’t believe that we are at the end of August already! I’m sad to see summer go but I love fall, so bring it on! Our family loved camping in the fall, I especially did when when the kids were young, the campgrounds are always so quite. This picture was taken at one of our favourite campsites in Alberta called Elkwater. We loved hiking up in the hills; in this picture our campsite was at the bottom of the hill we’re standing on. Now you may be wondering ‘why are the boys wearing helmets if they were hiking?’ Well, my husband was a little obsessed with safety! Hehe! (Wear your helmets just in case you fall)

To begin creating the Adventure word I used a pallet knife to randomly add some Tim Holtz Distress Grit Paste. You must allow this to dry before moving on.

Once it was dry I used my foam blending tool and added some Walnut Stain Distress Ink to the top. I love how the ink is darker on the spots where I did not have any paste.

I loved the texture of the wood gear pieces so I didn’t want to completely cover them with any colour. So I just lightly added some Walnut Stain Distress ink to all of them.

I wanted the clock and the abstract circle frame to stand out on the page so I added Walnut Stain Distress Stain to both of them.

Life's An Adventure Canvas with Deb Riddell

Hello and thank you for stopping by, it’s Deb here with you today.  I’d like to share with you a canvas I made for Creativation 2017 in Phoenix, Arizona that was displayed in Southern Ridge’s trade show booth in January.

I wanted to share my love of nature and the outdoors so used Southern Ridge’s Spruce Tree Cluster, Plump Spruce Tree, Adventure Word, Small Bird Mix and Friends Of Nature chipboard.  I don’t have any step out photos I’m afraid as I was making several projects at the same time when I made it in December but can share some close up photos with you and describe my process.  Hope you will enjoy seeing them!

I started out with a 6” x 8” flat artists canvas and primed it with gesso.  Stenciling came next with Ranger texture paste through several of Tim Holtz’s layering stencils, you can catch a glimpse of Tracks, Chevrons, Linen and Dot Fade in the picture below.

The canvas was then coloured with multiple washes of Distress stains in various shades of blue and once it had dried more stenciling was added through the mini Industrial Layering stencil with Old Paper Distress paint and some second generation stamping was done here and there with Tim Holtz’s Tree Line stamp and Ground Espresso Distress Archival ink.

The edges of the canvas were coloured with Ground Espresso Distress crayon and blended with my finger.

The Spruce Tree Cluster and Plump Spruce Tree chipboard pieces were coloured with multiple shades of green Distress Spray stains plus a bit of Picket Fence Distress spray stain to tone down the colour a bit.  They were adhered to the canvas with wet adhesive.

Three birds from the Small Bird Mix were coloured with Pitch Black alcohol ink and adhered to the top of the canvas.

The Adventure Word was painted with black acrylic paint and then heat embossed with multiple layers of clear embossing powder.   The word was mounted onto small pieces of black fun foam and adhered along the bottom edge of the canvas.

And finally, the grizzly bear from the Friends Of Nature set was embossed with Weathered Wood embossing powder from Emerald Creek Craft Supplies that I tinted slightly with some Ginger alcohol ink to tone down the white accents in the powder.  The bear was also mounted onto black fun foam and positioned on top of the Adventure Word.

As a final step, the back of the canvas was covered with a piece of scrapbook paper from my stash and I die cut a Small Easel die for displaying the finished canvas.

I hope you’ve enjoyed seeing my Life’s An Adventure canvas, I love how it turned out and was thrilled to bits to have it displayed in Southern Ridge’s booth at Creativation, thank you for the opportunity Karen!

Adventure In The Back Country Scrapbook Layout with Charlene Byrd

Hello everyone, Charlene here!

Thanks for joining me today on the blog! There is not much snow in southern Alberta in the winter so when we moved to Ontario the first thing that my son Hunter saved his money for was a sled! Last year he and his friend drove up to Pembroke with their sleds and rode the trails all day, loving every minute of it!

To create the tree I first stained it with Forest Green Distress Stain. I then added several different mediums to the tips to create the snow; most unsuccessfully as they all took on a green tinge from the stain. My end product was a textured sand medium and white acrylic paint.

I used my foam blending tool with Pumice Stone ink on the sled and then added some black soot ink around the edges.

The chains were simply stained with Black Soot Distress Stain and the stars with Fired Red Distress stain.

The Adventure word was another work in progress! I started with Crackle medium but I didn’t like the look of it when I added some colour, I tried making it red but it turned out looking pink! So I went with the old standby of black acrylic paint. I do like how the bumpy texture shows on the chipboard and I love how forgiving chipboard is to use. If you’re not happy with the look, simply paint over it! Voila!

Altered Mixed Media Bicycle Decor with Karen Bearse

I was given the opportunity to work with a new décor chipboard piece by Southern Ridge Trading Co. I had a lot of fun using multiple techniques and working on a larger scale than normal. If you happen upon their booth at the trade shows in Canada this month you can see it live!!

Here it is!! It took a while for me to figure out where I was going with this. I was thinking steampunk, maybe bright & colourful and playful. The bike sat in my kitchen where I would see it throughout the day as the ideas marinated in my brain. It took a few weeks but then bam inspiration hit and I started working on it.

In the end I went with a combo of the two. Photos don’t do this justice, live it is super shiny, with glimmer and metallic touches. The flowers are layers of crinoline, leather paper & tulle.

Ocean Inspired Layout with Katelyn Grosart

Hey Southern Ridge Trading Company fans, Katelyn here, and I'm up on the blog today to share with you some inspiration for our current monthly challenge which is "Anything Summer".  With this month's challenge in mind, I created an ocean inspired layout featuring a variety of ocean inspired chipboard pieces. I will share with you below how I transformed my chipboard pieces into perfect additions for my ocean layout.

To start, you'll want to trim the woodgrain paper down to 11 1/2" x 11 1/2". Once the paper is trimmed, place the small holes stencil in the top right corner and place a thin layer of texture paste through it with a palette knife. Pull the stencil up and continue to move it down the paper until you reach the bottom left hand corner. Make sure that each time the stencil is laid down, that it's a thin layer of Texture Paste going through it, that way it will take less time to dry. Set paper aside to dry.

After the texture paste has been stenciled on to the patterned paper,  you'll want to pull out six mini anchors, the shell from the Ocean Mix 1 and the other shell from the Ocean Mix 2. Spray all the chipboard pieces with Worn Leather Color Bloom spray, once they have been sprayed, dry them with a heat tool. Once the chipboard pieces are dry, apply a thin coat of Glossy Accents to the 6 mini anchors. Set chipboard pieces aside to dry.

Next, you'll want to cut apart five sea horses from the Mini Ocean Set, the starfish from the Ocean Mix 1  and the starfish from the Ocean Mix 2. Spray all of the chipboard pieces with Soft Teal Color Bloom spray, once they have been sprayed, dry them with a heat tool. Once the chipboard pieces are dry, apply a thin coat of Glossy Accents to the five seahorses. Set chipboard pieces aside to dry.

After the previous chipboard pieces have been coloured, you'll want to cut apart three dolphins and five starfish from the Mini Ocean Set. Spray all the chipboard pieces with Cobalt Color Bloom Spray, once they have been sprayed, dry them with a heat tool. Once the chipboard pieces are dry, apply a thin coat of Glossy Accents to the dolphins and starfish. Set chipboard pieces aside to dry.

The last chipboard piece you'll work on is the Adventure Word. For the adventure word, apply a thin layer of white gesso over top, that way some of the chipboard shows through. After the gesso has dried, with a blending tool, lightly apply Vintage Photo Distress Ink over top of the word.

Once the Glossy Accents has dried on the chipboard pieces it's time to start assembling your layout. Before adhering the patterned paper together, make sure to edge distress the edges with a distressor and ink the edges, including the photo mat, with a blending tool using Vintage Photo Distress Ink. Once the papers have been distressed and inked, they can be adhered together, making sure the stencil piece is on top. Cut a piece of decorative netting and adhere with Glue Dots, however you'd like on the patterned paper with the stenciling on it. Now that the netting is down, adhere you photo in the upper right hand corner, make sure to leave room for the chipboard embellishments around it. Place foam squares on the back of the adventure word and place on the bottom right hand side of the photo. 

In the top right hand corner of the photo mat, you'll want to place and adhere the two large starfish, three mini anchors, two small starfish, one dolphin, three seahorses and three rocks as desired. When I adhered the chipboard pieces and rocks, I used Glue Dots.

In the bottom left hand corner of the photo mat, you'll want to place and adhere the two large shells, three small starfish, two dolphins, two seahorses, three mini anchors and two rocks as desired. When I adhered the chipboard pieces and rocks, I used Glue Dots.
