Believe Wall Hanging with Katelyn Grosart

Hey Southern Ridge Trading Company fans, Katelyn here and I'm back on the blog today to share with you some Christmas inspiration. To start, I want to wish you and your loved ones a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Today I get to share with you my Believe Wall Hanging that will be sure to inspire you to recreate it for your own home. Grab a cup of your favourite Christmas beverage and learn how to recreate my wall hanging at home.

To start, take the Believe Flourish Sign out of the package. You'll need the back piece first. Apply one coat of White Gesso to the entire sign. Once the gesso has dried, apply two coats of Titanium White Acrylic paint over the entire sign. With the white paint dry, run Walnut Stain Distress Stain over the entire sign. Before the stain dries, wipe off a bit of the stain to allow the white paint to show through. Once the stain has thoroughly dried, apply Jet Black Archival Ink to the script word stamp and randomly stamp over the back piece. To finish off the back piece of the sign, lightly apply Ground Espresso Distress Ink over the entire sign. Set the back piece aside.

Now you'll need the believe portion of the sign. To start, apply one coat of White Gesso to the entire sign. Once the gesso has dried, apply two coats of Titanium White Acrylic paint over the entire sign. With the white paint dry, run Gathered Twigs Distress Stain over the parts on the sign that don't have the snowflakes. Before the stain dries, wipe off a bit of the stain to allow the white paint to show through. Once the stain has thoroughly dried, apply Jet Black Archival Ink to the script word stamp and randomly stamp over the believe piece. Lightly apply Ground Espresso Distress Ink over the believe sign that is already brown. 

For the "Believe" word, apply Emboss It Ink to the entire Believe word. Sprinkle Charred Gold Embossing Powder over the entire word. Tap off the excess powder and emboss with a heat tool. For the snowflakes, apply Emboss It Ink to each snowflake. Sprinkle Fractured Iced Embossing Powder over each snowflake. Tap off the excess powder and emboss with a heat tool. 

To add some highlights to the believe sign, add some White Gold wax over the entire sign with your finger.

Adhere the Believe part of the sign to the back of the sign with glue.

From the Snowflakes 714 package, you'll need all of the snowflakes. For the large snowflakes, apply two coats of Brushed Pewter Distress Stain. Set those snowflakes aside to dry.

Take out five Snowflakes from the Snowflakes 712 package. Apply two coats of Brushed Pewter Distress Stain to each snowflake. From the same package, take out five snowflakes and apply Emboss It Ink to each snowflake. Sprinkle Fracture Ice Embossing Powder over each snowflake. Tap off the excess powder and emboss with a heat tool. 

Adhere the three of the small snowflakes around the believe word. You'll want to layer the large and small snowflakes and then adhere them onto the larger snowflakes. 

In the bottom right hand corner of the sign by the snowflake adhere four aqua roses, two dark brown roses, two light brown roses and three cream roses.

In the top left hand corner of the sign by the "B" in believe adhere two aqua roses, three dark brown roses, one light brown roses and three cream roses.

To finish off the top of the wall hanging, punch two holes and tie ribbon through.

Bone Yard Skelly Tag with Deb Riddell

Hello and thanks for stopping by, Deb Riddell here with you today on this spooky Friday the 13th to share a frightful Halloween decoration created with Southern Ridge’s Skeleton, Skull and Spider Web chipboard.

I have some step out pictures of how I created my Bone Yard Skelly tag, read on if you dare!

I started with a small Tim Holtz Etcetera Thickboard tag and covered it with some barn wood paper from his Materialize Paper Stash, inking the edges with Ground Espresso Distress Archival Ink.

I painted the Skeleton chipboard with brown acrylic paint and then covered it with Deco Foil Adhesive.  After the adhesive had dried clear and tacky, I burnished on some Rebekah Meier Designs Antique Pearl Mixed Media Transfer Foil.  I loved the negative image left on the foil nearly as much as the chipboard skeleton so decided to use it as well.

I cut out the negative skeleton image left on the Transfer Foil and adhered it to a piece of Deco Foil Toner Sheet with my heat laminator.  I roughly tore around the image once it had transferred and inked the edges with more Ground Espresso Archival Ink.

The foiled toner sheet skeleton was adhered to the Thickboard tag along with some Halloween images from one of Tim’s Halloween Ephemera packs and a stamped and inked skull from his Regions Beyond stamp set.

Typography letters to spell out ‘bone yard’ were inked with multiple colours of alcohol inks (Mushroom, Ginger, Caramel and a touch of Rust).

The small Spider Web was embossed with Oil Rubbed Bronze embossing powder from Emerald Creek Craft Supplies.

A Skull charm from Emerald Creek Craft Supplies was covered with Pitch Black alcohol ink and while the ink was still wet, it was gently rubbed of the front of the skull leaving the darkest colours in the recesses of the charm.  A piece of black thread was tied onto the Skull charm.

In my usual style I then got on a roll and forgot to take any more in process pictures so will try to describe what I did next!  I added Mushroom alcohol ink to a Crypt Cameo and tied on more black thread.  The word ‘boo’ was die cut from black cardstock (Vintage Spirits die) and mounted onto a piece of die cut black fun foam for dimension.  Some phrases from Tim Holtz’s Halloween Clipping Stickers were inked with Ground Espresso Archival Ink.  Boneyard bones were inked with the same colours of alcohol inks as the Typography letters.

A Halloween Word Band was inked with Mushroom alcohol ink and the lettering enhanced with a Black Soot Distress Crayon.  Pieces of rusty wire were twisted on each end and inserted through two small holes drilled through the Thickboard tag.  Another Halloween Clipping Sticker and Boneyard bones were added around the Word Band.

The Skull chipboard piece was painted with shades of beige, brown, green and red acrylic paint, stippling the colours on randomly and then stippling on some Rock Candy Distress Crackle paint once the acrylics had dried.  Ground Espresso Distress crayon was added to emphasize the cracks and texture and the edges inked with Ground Espresso Archival Ink.

Here are a couple of more close ups, the embossed Spider Web was added to the top left and the Typography words adhered over top.

And the foiled Skeleton chipboard was added to the upper right of the tag.

Love Heart & Soul Mixed Media Canvas with Deb Riddell

Hello everyone, thank you for stopping by.  It’s Deb here today to share a mixed media canvas with you that I made using Southern Ridge’s Mare and Foal, Taneesha Heart and Heart Filigree Border chipboard pieces and Heart stencil.

This canvas would be a lovely gift for any Mom on Mother’s Day and all the horse lovers in your life would appreciate it too I think.  I’ve a few step out photos for you on how I created it, hope you will enjoy seeing them.

I started out with 6” x 8” flat artists canvas and added the word ‘love’ to the left side before coating it with gesso.  The letters for the word love were die cut with Tim Holtz’s Alpha Numeric ¾” dies, I layered four of each letter together for some dimension.

I then stenciled some hearts here and there onto the canvas through Southern Ridge’s Heart stencil with Ranger Opaque Texture paste.

After the texture paste dried, I added repeated washes of DecoArt Media fluid acrylics in Cobalt Turquoise Hue and Green Gold, spritzing with water for some drips and runs and drying in between.  A final wash of Golden Titan Buff and DecoArt Media Titanium White was followed with stamping with a fine script stamp and Distress Vintage Photo Archival ink and some spatters of diluted Titanium white.

The canvas was then given a coat of Distress Vintage Collage medium and the edges shaded with Vintage Photo and Walnut Stain Distress crayons.

The Mare and Foal chipboard pieces were painted with Distress Brushed Corduroy paint.

The horses were then stenciled with the Flourish layering stencil and Gloss Transparent Texture paste.  Once the paste had dried, the horses were coloured with Gathered Twigs Distress ink and the ink was rubbed off of the gloss texture medium with a soft cloth. I ended up darkening the horses slightly with some Walnut Stain Distress ink in the same manner before adding them to the canvas.

The Taneesha Heart and Heart Filigree Border were painted with Brushed Corduroy Distress paint and then stamped with Tim Holtz’s Ledger Script stamp and Distress Vintage Photo Archival ink.  They were given a coat of satin varnish and slightly shaded with Walnut Stain Distress crayon.

And finally, one of Tim Holtz’s Quote Chips was coloured with Old Paper and Shabby Shutters Distress crayons and edged with Walnut Stain crayon.

To assemble the canvas, the Taneesha Heart and Heart Filigree Border were centered top and bottom.

And the Quote Chip adhered to the right side of the canvas.

The Mare and Foal chipboard pieces were popped up on some small pieces of black fun foam and adhered overtop of the Taneesha Heart, perched on top of the Heart Filigree Border.

You can see the dimension in the picture below and also see some of the sheen from the gloss texture paste embossing on the horses.

Life's An Adventure Canvas with Deb Riddell

Hello and thank you for stopping by, it’s Deb here with you today.  I’d like to share with you a canvas I made for Creativation 2017 in Phoenix, Arizona that was displayed in Southern Ridge’s trade show booth in January.

I wanted to share my love of nature and the outdoors so used Southern Ridge’s Spruce Tree Cluster, Plump Spruce Tree, Adventure Word, Small Bird Mix and Friends Of Nature chipboard.  I don’t have any step out photos I’m afraid as I was making several projects at the same time when I made it in December but can share some close up photos with you and describe my process.  Hope you will enjoy seeing them!

I started out with a 6” x 8” flat artists canvas and primed it with gesso.  Stenciling came next with Ranger texture paste through several of Tim Holtz’s layering stencils, you can catch a glimpse of Tracks, Chevrons, Linen and Dot Fade in the picture below.

The canvas was then coloured with multiple washes of Distress stains in various shades of blue and once it had dried more stenciling was added through the mini Industrial Layering stencil with Old Paper Distress paint and some second generation stamping was done here and there with Tim Holtz’s Tree Line stamp and Ground Espresso Distress Archival ink.

The edges of the canvas were coloured with Ground Espresso Distress crayon and blended with my finger.

The Spruce Tree Cluster and Plump Spruce Tree chipboard pieces were coloured with multiple shades of green Distress Spray stains plus a bit of Picket Fence Distress spray stain to tone down the colour a bit.  They were adhered to the canvas with wet adhesive.

Three birds from the Small Bird Mix were coloured with Pitch Black alcohol ink and adhered to the top of the canvas.

The Adventure Word was painted with black acrylic paint and then heat embossed with multiple layers of clear embossing powder.   The word was mounted onto small pieces of black fun foam and adhered along the bottom edge of the canvas.

And finally, the grizzly bear from the Friends Of Nature set was embossed with Weathered Wood embossing powder from Emerald Creek Craft Supplies that I tinted slightly with some Ginger alcohol ink to tone down the white accents in the powder.  The bear was also mounted onto black fun foam and positioned on top of the Adventure Word.

As a final step, the back of the canvas was covered with a piece of scrapbook paper from my stash and I die cut a Small Easel die for displaying the finished canvas.
