Dream Scrapbook Layout with Karla Yungwirth

Hello friends! Karla here today with a bright and colourful layout using the 6x6 Navajo Stencil, the Dreamcatcher Chipboard and the medium Dream Fun Word from the Southern Ridge Trading Company Shop. I had fun embellishing the chipboard pieces with embossing powders and added even more sparkle with sparkly texture paste and the cool stencil. I love how many different pieces are available in the shop – I think you’ll find pretty much everything to match your own photos and make a personalized scrapbook layout.

I started off by stenciling Vicki Boutin’s Color Kaleidoscope Iridescent Texture Paste over the SRTC Navajo Stencil. Just by using a palette knife and roughly spreading it on I got a great texture, and I love the bits of iridescent pieces in this paste! This is the Medium sized stencil, which is 6x6” but there is also a 3x3” and a 12x12” size available!

Next, I customized the chipboard pieces with Emerald Creek Embossing Powders. By using a Ranger Emboss It Dauber I added sticky embossing ink to the chipboard and simply poured on the desired  powder. I used Northern Lights and Charred Gold on the Dream Fun Word for my layout title – I love how they mix! Then, I used colours similar to the dream catcher my daughter made in the photo to colour the Dreamcatcher Chipboard piece – Lapis Lazuli, Black Magic and Northern Lights again.  The chipboard pieces are so detailed and beautifully cut!

I am using a kit from Scrapbook & Cards Today, and I love how the stencil and chipboard pieces work so beautifully together with it! I used a sketch that came in the kit and since all the papers are already matched it came together quite quickly. I love how the sparkly heart enamel dots coordinate with the sparkle on the chipboard and the paste.

There are many Fun Word chipboard pieces available in the shop – so perfect to add as a title to a layout!! Plus, you can get several sizes so if you want to use them on a card or home décor piece you also have options. I also love stencils because of their versatility – there are so many ways to use them too!

Beautiful Memories Scrapbook Layout with Karla Yungwirth

Hello! It’s Karla back today with a pretty Spring-like scrapbook layout using the sweet Butterfly Wings Stencil, Butterfly Swirl Combo chipboard pack and Spring Butterfly Wreath chipboard from the Southern Ridge Trading Company Shop. It seems like the winter has gone on forever here in Calgary, Alberta, and I for one, am really ready for warmer weather. Interestingly, the photo in this layout was taken in December, but the flowers and butterflies coordinate with the lovely flowers in my sister and her daughter’s hair.

I decided to experiment with Distress Crayons to alter the chipboard pieces and love how they turned out! I’ll be doing a video for my next post to show you exactly how I did it  I started off by rubbing various colours of Distress Crayons directly on the chipboard, and then smoothing the colour out with my finger, applying one colour at a time. I found by having a baby wipe handy I could slightly wet my finger to help with the blending, while not oversaturating the chipboard. I covered the surface with a coat of Tattered Angels Chalk Chalkboard Mist that I put into a waterbrush applicator. It is semi-opaque and has a gorgeous shimmer effect!

I recently picked up some of Vicki Boutin’s new Iridescent Texture Paste and decided to try it through the Butterfly Stencil. On the teal cardstock I used a palette knife and added the yummy paste directly on the background. On the bottom left I first used Distress Oxide Inks to add colour with a sponge through the stencil, traced around the inside openings with a black pen, and then added the Texture Paste. I added some pretty gems to create a body. I just love how these turned out!

The butterflies and swirls all look so wonderful combined with the Jen Hadfield Along The Way collection and Simple Stories Spring Farmhouse floral elements. I hope you’ll try out some of these techniques to embellish your own chipboard!

Crafty Art Journal with Emma Ivemey

Hello there!  Emma here with you today to share an art journal page I’ve created using the beautiful chipboard shapes from Southern Ridge.

I’m sure I’m not alone in sometimes going through a creative low patch.  When there’s a lot going on in your life, it can often be difficult to sit down and create.  Maybe you’re thinking “what shall I make”, or perhaps it’s “why do I make”? Creative blocks can be hard to get through.

I think the important thing to remember is that art doesn’t always follow rules, and often it can be helpful to use an art journal to create something spontaneous that comes from your heart.  It’s your journal, and it’s for you to keep entirely to yourself if you like. It’s a great strategy for experimenting with new mediums, or a new stencil.

For this piece, I have used the Vintage Dressmaker Mix set.  I have embellished the chipboard with Tim Holtz Distress Oxide, and also the Distress Crayons.  I loved the metallic look for the sewing machine and scissors.
