Hello and thanks for stopping by, it’s Deb Riddell here today to share a spooky Halloween canvas with you that I created with some of Southern Ridge’s wonderful new Halloween chipboard releases!
You’ve probably heard of Christmas In July celebrations and creations but I decided that it was time we started to celebrate Halloween In July because it’s never too early (or too late!) to create for Halloween ;O)
I started with a 6” x 8” flat artists canvas, primed it with gesso and then added layers and washes of DecoArt Media Fluid acrylic paints in Paynes Grey, Prussian Blue and Quinacridone Violet followed by a final wash of Titanium White.
Halloween images from Stampers Anonymous’ Haunted Mansion and Undertaker stamp sets were stamped onto white tissue paper with Black Soot Archival ink and torn out.
The stamped images were then decoupaged onto the painted canvas with Distress Matte Collage medium and when dry the canvas was given another wash of Titanium White DecoArt Media Fluid acrylic paint.
Some bats were stenciled onto the canvas through Tim Holtz’s Batground Layering stencil (love the name of that stencil!) and a Black Soot Distress Crayon for dimension.
Southern Ridge’s brand new Scary Word was coloured with several layers of Distress Sprays in Barn Door and Festive Berries, drying in between each layer, followed with a final splatter spray of Aged Mahogany Distress Spray Stain and sealed with Americana Satin varnish.
The new Coming To Get You boney hands were coloured with Picket Fence Distress Stain and then sprayed lightly with Pumice Stone and Tea Dye Distress Spray Stains and splattered with Gathered Twigs Distress Stain. A final spray of Picket Fence Distress Spray Stain finished them off and then they were sealed with Americana Matte varnish.
Southern Ridge’s Corner Web chipboard piece was sprayed with Black Soot Distress Spray Stain and when dry, Deco Foil Adhesive was applied with Therm O Web’s Deco Foil Adhesive Pen. Once the adhesive had dried clear and tacky, the web was foiled with Black Deco Foil by laying the foil over the web (remember, shiny side down!) and burnishing the foil with my finger.
I wanted to create a fence for those spooky boney hands to climb over as they were Coming To Get You so I inked up a piece of white cardstock with Distress Stains in Gathered Twigs, Pumice Stone and a top coat of Picket Fence. Once the stains had dried, Tim Holtz’s Birch stamp was stamped on top with Hickory Smoke and Vintage Photo Archival inks.
The inked and stamped cardstock was trimmed down and adhered to one side of Rebekah Meier Designs Mixed Media Foam Sheet from Therm O Web.
The ‘fence’ was then cut out by cutting irregular widths from the cardstock covered foam sheet and peeling off the adhesive backing on each piece and adhering it to the prepared canvas.
The Coming To Get You boney hands were adhered overtop of the fence, adding bits of Mixed Media Art Foam behind the chipboard fingers as necessary to support them.
The foiled Corner Web was adhered onto the top left corner;
And the Scary Word adhered over the middle of the canvas, supporting it as necessary with more small piece of Mixed Media Foam Sheet.
I needed a little something in the top right corner of the canvas so coloured a Steampunk Bat charm from Emerald Creek Craft Supplies with Pitch Black and Mushroom alcohol inks and adhered it to the canvas.
