Believe Winter Canvas with Karen Bearse

Karen Bearse here today with a Winter canvas entitled Believe. I am writing this on the 18th of December. As I scramble toward the ever looming Christmas deadline I come up with the best ideas at the last second. It is my process. One year I was up until 4am Christmas Eve making Twilight ornaments for my sister & mother in-law. I of course had come up with the idea at midnight. Brilliant! This year I am trying to get inventive while there is still time to execute.

Here is my very shimmery, metallic canvas. I put a photo of my kids to give you an idea of what it will look like. This canvas has by now been unwrapped and has a happy new home in Wisconsin. I sent it with the adhesive already in place so all my SIL has to do is take off the paper backing and adhere her photo.

To: Santa Scrapbook Layout with Charlene Byrd

Hello everyone!

This photo has been such a favourite of my twin 3 year old great nephews. They are always grabbing my phone wanting to see their papa (who is sitting on Santa’s knee).

To create the ornaments I first glued paper onto the solid chipboard pieces. I sanded around the edges to remove the excess paper, and then inked them. If you have the Basic Grey Precision File set (from years ago) it comes in really handy to do the top sections of the ornaments. The kraft colour of the chippies was a perfect match for the paper I was using so I didn’t add any colour to the top ornate pieces.  I just simply dabbed on some Vintage Photo Distress Stickles to give the ornaments a bit of shimmer.

And to make them even cuter I decorated the gold string with some beads.

The wooden Santa word was stained with Walnut Distress Stain and then I added more Stickles.

Here is a little tip to make the border on the right side. Add as many strips as you want to your background paper. Once you have the desired amount simply place your paper in your trimmer and re-cut the background page to 12”. That way you’re not adding pieces of paper trying to make it 12” wide.

Christmas Album Cover For Journal Your Christmas with Karen Bearse

Every year I start a Journal Your Christmas (JYC) book. Some years I finish it, some years it takes me a little longer to get it all done. JYC is a yearly class put on by Shimelle Lane. 3 years ago I took a Christmas book class by a good friend of mine Deborah Mahnken who also participates. I didn’t finish the book cover and realized Southern Ridge Trading Co. chippies are perfect to get this cover done. This actually was fairly easy to do so I hope you give it a try if you are wanting to create a cover for your book!

Here is my finished book. I love it! There are a few different techniques used but I encourage you to try this the next time you have a big chipboard die to work with. Pull out your favourite supplies and use them on different parts of the project.

Here is how my book started. When working on a book I always like to finish with the cover. It makes it easier to work on the inside and helps protect the cover from being damaged in the process. I keep my finished books with my Christmas decorations so they are on display during the season for friends and family to enjoy. How about a quick tutorial?

Here are the fun products I used to colour my chippies. Just work on the different areas separately to get this effect. The main words are coloured with Winters Mistake emboss powder. The sled, reindeer, and mistletoe are painted with distress stain. Once dry use a glue pen to emboss some highlights with Soft Fallen Snow. The stars, deer antlers, and sled runners were coloured using a gold pen. The circles & tree coloured using distress crayon. The stocking was coloured with a distress marker. To keep the crayon from smudging, paint a layer of gel medium over those areas. To help this are pop cut a piece of black cardstock to fit & glue it on.

The ornament comes in 2 pieces, the background is solid & top piece ornamental. The background was heat embossed with Northern Lights a stunning iridescent blue/green. The top piece heat embossed using Onyx Frost, a cool chunky glittery black- love this combo!

The deer I left plain because it is so pretty on its own. Using distress stain would work to keep the etched images showing if you want to add colour. I put it on a bed of washi tape with a paper cut out. That’s it! Now my book is ready to be displayed for the family to enjoy as we head toward the Christmas season!!
