Blue Winter with Sandy McTier

BlueWinter.jpg

Christmas in July!!!! Do you start painting your ornaments and gifts early or are you like me, waiting until the last minute to get a month’s worth of work done in a few days?? Here’s a sweet little winter scene, using SRTC deer chipboard to get you started on that holiday painting now!!

 Ornament Prep:
  • Using a 3/4" Wash brush, I painted the surface with DecoArt All Purpose Sealer and let completely dry.
  • Once dried, I gave it a light sanding. Then I painted on a smooth layer of DecoArt Media Gesso and let completely dry. Once dried, I gave it another light sanding, removing any dust.

Fawn Prep:
  • I painted the chipboard piece with Gesso using an IPC Large Oval Foam brush.

Ornament:
  • I spritzed the ornament with water and then spritzed it with DecoArt Shimmer Mister Turquoise.
  • I tilted it back and forth and up and down to get the paint to move. Then I dried it with a heat tool.
  • Next, I used a #8 Shader and painted thin trees in the background with DecoArt Media Titanium White – making some trunks shorter and some longer.
  • Then I added some strokes with Titanium White to give the appearance that the trees were evergreens.
  • I added in some snow using Titanium White and a side-to-side motion. The key is to not cover up too much of the blue as this will give some shadows to the snow.
  • Once I got the trees the way I liked them, I decided I wanted to add some water. So I painted in a stream using DecoArt Media Phthalo Blue, adding a snow bank around the stream with more Titanium White.
  • I repainted the branches on the two evergreen trees and while wet, sprinkled some DecoArt Glamour Dust on them.
  • I added a darker border around the edge of the ornament with DecoArt Media Paynes Grey.
  • I also painted some little stars in the background between the trees using a liner brush and Titanium White.

Fawn:
  • I painted the fawn with a mixture of DecoArt Media Quinacridone Gold and Titanium White and let dry. Then I…
  • Shaded him with DecoArt Media Raw Umber using a Dynasty 3/8" Angle brush.
  • Added white accents on his chest, tail, ears, snout and eye.
  • Painted his hooves, eye, nose, mouth and the edge of his ears with DecoArt Media Carbon Black.
  • Added a highlight on the eye, nose and hooves with Titanium White.
  • Dry brushed some Titanium White on the front of his legs.
  • Finally, I added some dots on his tail end with Titanium White. Then I let dry and painted a wash of Quinacridone Gold over them. I let dry again and repainted some of the dots with Titanium White.

Finishing Touches:
  • I let everything dry and then glued the deer on the ornament with E6000.
  • I varnished the piece with DecoArt Media Soft-Touch Varnish and added a ribbon.
  • Hang it on your Christmas tree or give it as a gift!

I'm Sorry for what I said Before my Coffee Piece with Sandy McTier

srtc.jpg

I’ll admit… I’m addicted to coffee! I love the smell, the warmth when holding the cup and, of course, the taste!! I also love coffee art and knew I had to do something with these adorable SRTC chipboard coffee/tea pieces.

Prepping the Pieces:

  • Using an IPC Large Oval Foam, paint a thin layer of Gesso over the chipboard; let dry.
  • Load a palette knife with Gesso and scrape over the entire wooden canvas to give it some texture.

image1.jpg

  • Spritz the dry surface with water and then using a #14 Wash, slip slap some Transparent Yellow Iron Oxide along the top third.
  • Wipe the brush off. Load with Quinacridone Gold and repeat for the middle section.
  • Wipe the brush off. Load with Raw Umber and finish painting the bottom section.
  • Wipe the brush off. Softly blend where the colours meet. Wipe the brush off often!
  • Let completely dry.

image5.jpg

  • Load the stencil brush with Titan Buff and wipe almost all of it off on a paper towel. Using a circular motion, brush over the Zig Zag stencil. Make sure to do the sides as well. Let dry.
  • Load the stencil brush with Carbon Black and wipe most of it off on a paper towel. Repeat the circular motion over the coffee stencil. Load the liner brush with Carbon Black and fill in the bridges to take away the stenciled look.
  • Load the liner brush with Quinacridone Gold and paint a shadow on the words BEFORE and COFFEE.

image9.jpg

  • Load the IPC Large Oval Foam with Carbon Black and run across a paper towel to get rid of excess paint. Lightly rub back and forth along the edge to give the top of the canvas a framed in look. Let dry.
image10.jpg

  • Load a very wet #14 Wash with Carbon Black. Tap the handle over another brush handle to add splatter here and there. Lightly lay a piece of paper towel over the splatter and lightly press to soften the look. Repeat with Titan Buff and then Cobalt Teal Hue.
  • Paint the coffeepot and cup with Extreme Sheen Vintage Brass. Let dry.
  • Load the toe of a damp 3/8" Angle with Raw Umber and shade around the shape to give the chipboard pieces some dimension. Let dry.

image11.jpg

image12.jpg

  • Load the Medium Mezzaluna with Titan Buff and wipe almost all of the paint off on a paper towel. Dry brush some highlights on the coffee pot, front of cup and on the steam. Load the liner brush with Titan Buff. Paint a small highlight on the dry brushed areas.
  • Add a pop dot to the back of each piece and attach to the canvas.
  • Load the toe of a damp 3/8" Angle with Paynes Grey and shade underneath the coffee pot, to the right of the top finial, underneath the cup and handle.
  • Let everything dry.

I think this would be adorable on a tag as well! Hope you enjoy creating this piece!!

Embrace Life Shelf Plaque with Sand McTier

Love this time of year when bees, butterflies and dragonflies are everywhere, don’t you?
It usually means the weather is getting warmer and flowers are blooming!

I hope you’ll enjoy creating this simple yet colourful design as much as I did! It doesn’t show up well in the photograph, but the background colours are metallic and so is the dragonfly! They shimmer and shine, and as I pass this little plaque on the shelf, the light dances all over the metallics, bringing it to life!

Prepping the Pieces:

Stand:
  • Using a 3/4" wash brush, paint the Medium Canvas Stand with DecoArt’s All Purpose Sealer and let completely dry.
  • Once dried, give it a light sanding. Then paint on a smooth layer of DecoArt Media Gesso and let completely dry. Once dried, give it another light sanding, removing any dust.

Dragonfly:
  • Load a damp #12 flat brush with Metallic Lustre Lavish Green and tap it on here and there. Rinse the brush and mix with some Metallic Lustre Purple. Tap the colour on here and there. Finish with a little Metallic Lustre White Frost, highlighting in a couple of places.
  • Once dried, varnish with DecoArt Media Soft-Touch Varnish.

Stand:
  • Lay the Dragonfly Fantasy stencil in place. Load one of the stencil brushes with Extreme Sheen Aquamarine, wiping most of it off on a paper towel. Using a soft circular motion, stencil over the beautiful Rebecca Baer stencil, mostly along the top half of the surface.
  • Load the other stencil brush with Extreme Sheen Amethyst, wiping most of it off on a paper towel. Repeat the circular motion over the stencil from the middle, down and on the stand as well. Add some of the purple up into the dragonfly’s wings.
  • Blend where it meets the Aquamarine. You might need to add more of the Aquamarine and then more Amethyst to get them to blend nicely. Let dry.
  • Load the IPC Large Oval Foam Sponge with Carbon Black, blotting any excess off on a paper towel. Run the brush along the inside edge of the surface to give it a framed in look.
  • Wipe the Amethyst stencil brush off on a paper towel and then load with Carbon Black, wiping most of it off onto a paper towel.
  • Lay the word stencil in place and, using a soft circular motion, go over the words. Load the liner brush with Carbon Black and attach the letters so that it doesn’t look like you’ve used a stencil.
  • Load the #12 flat brush with water and dip into Extreme Sheen Amethyst; splatter colour in a few places on the plaque. Rinse and repeat with Titanium White.
  • Let everything dry and then varnish with DecoArt Media Soft-Touch Varnish.

Finishing Touches:
  • Glue the dragonfly on the stand with E6000.
  • Display!
