Halloween Mixed Media Journal with Karen Jiles

Hi there,

It’s Karen, one of the newest members of the Southern Ridge Trading Company Design Team family. I’m sharing a Halloween Mixed Media Journal created with the Happy Halloween Chipboard set. Creating with these chipboard pieces were so much fun and easy. I simply cut the chipboard pieces apart from its sheet and had fun. My journal has loads of visual and physical texture and the chipboard pieces made this project come to life. I also enjoyed how easy it was to customize the chipboard to coordinate with my colour choices and additional embellishments. Take a peek at how the journal came together in the tutorial below.

Step 1: Cut chipboard apart using scissors.

Step 2: Paint chipboard with black gesso. Set aside to dry.

Step 3: Choose coordinating pattered papers, trim them down to layering sizes and sand edges as needed. Distress the edges with black ink.

Step 4: Adhere all paper layers together. Then adhere to front of journal. Note: Round some of the focal layers with a corner rounder. Set aside.

Step 5: Apply embellishment mousse to the chipboard pieces and frame.

Step 6: Adhere the chipboard pieces, frame, sentiment, bow and button to the journal.

Step 7: Add coordinating beads to inside of frame.

Step 8: Using a paintbrush, tab white gesso onto journal. Continue embellishing as desired.
