Hugs & Kisses Mixed Media Valentine with Deb Riddell

Hello and thank you for stopping by, Deb here today to share a mixed media Valentine with you that I made for my hubby using Southern Ridge Trading Company’s Chipboard Albums, Wild Heart, Love and Hearts Banner and Heart stencil.

I knew I wanted to cover one of the blank pages from the Chipboard Album with scrapbook paper and use that as the base for my valentine but couldn’t find any paper in my stash that was to my liking.  So I decided to ‘make’ some paper of my own and used this 12 x 12 black and tan floral paper as my starting point (sorry no idea who’s paper this is, it was a gift from a friend and there are no markings on it).

I slip slapped some DecoArt Acrylic gesso onto it with a large paint brush, leaving some of the background pattern showing through here and there, and then added some stenciled hearts through the Heart stencil using DecoArt Media Modeling Paste.

Once the modeling paste had dried, I painted the whole sheet with washes of DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylics, drying in between the washes and adding spritzes and runs of water as I layered.  I used Green Gold, Yellow Green Light and Cobalt Teal Hue.

The painted and stenciled paper was adhered to the blank chipboard page and the edges were trimmed and sanded with an emery board.

A coat of Distress Crazing Collage medium came next and when it was dry, I washed the whole page with diluted Payne’s Grey DecoArt Media Fluid acrylic, wiping the wash back with a damp baby wipe so that the grey blue colour just emphasized the crazing.

The chipboard heart insert from the Wild Heart set was coloured with Barn Red Distress Stain and embossed with the Script embossing folder from We R Memory Keepers.  The raised embossing was then emphasized with a dry brush of Cool White DecoArt Americana acrylic paint.

The Love banner from the Love and Hearts Banner set was heat embossed with a mixture of Burnt Copper Leaves and Hammered Metal embossing powders from Emerald Creek Craft Supplies.

The number 14 from Tim Holtz’s Metal Numbers and an arrow paper clip from my stash were coloured with alcohol inks, I used a combination of Mushroom, Pitch Black and Rust.

A small white resin frame was painted with Ground Espresso Distress Paint and then given several washes of Golden Fluid Acrylics Quinacridone/Nickel Azo Gold.

And then the valentine was assembled. The Love banner was adhered across the top of the chipboard page, trimming off the ends slightly to fit.

The painted resin frame was then centered overtop of some ‘hugs and kisses’ from Tim Holtz’s Label Letters and the alcohol ink coloured arrow positioned to point towards the frame.

The embossed heart was positioned overtop of some coffee stained cheesecloth and a piece of coffee stained lace was adhered along the bottom edge of the chipboard page.

A fragment of Tim Holtz Passport Design Tape was positioned beside the heart and then the alcohol ink coloured numbers were glued to the page with E6000 glue.

And to finish the valentine, I edged the chipboard page with Ground Espresso Distress crayon, blending it in with my finger.

I hope that you have enjoyed my how to and that I’ve given you some inspiration for your own Valentine creations this year.
