Hello, Deb Riddell here to share with you my very first design team project for Southern Ridge Trading Company! I am so excited to be a part of this amazing team and to be able to share with you some ways to incorporate their fabulous products into your creations. Our challenge theme this month is to create a Father’s Day or Masculine project and here is my contribution
As soon as I saw the fabulous Dad Word chipboard piece I knew I had to use it and when I found that wonderful vintage family photo at Vintage Everyday, the plaque came together. Here’s how I made it.
I started out with a piece of scrapbook paper from Tim Holtz’s Correspondence Paper Stash, tattered the edges and did some background stamping with his Compass Blueprint, Vintage Auto and The Journey stamps using Jet Black Archival ink. I clear embossed the compass blueprint image as well.
I then coloured the Dad Word chipboard piece with a black Ranger Emboss It pen and heat embossed it with fine line black embossing powder. Once the embossing had cooled, I added bits of glue stick here and there on the embossed chipboard and rubbed some silver Deco Foil onto the glued areas. Small pieces of black fun foam were cut and glued to the back of the word so it would have some dimension once added to the scrapbook paper background.
I printed the vintage photo out onto some heavy cardstock, tattered the edges and then added bits of colour with Distress ink and a water brush. I can’t tell you how much I love this photograph, did you notice that the young girls sitting in front of Mom are holding their kittens? The whole family is going for a make believe drive! I added some photo corners to the picture and mounted it onto more black fun foam.
I then restamped the Compass Blueprint stamp 4 times onto cardstock and cut out the various layers using the accompanying dies. All pieces were coloured with Old Paper Distress ink and then I highlighted some of the details with several colours of Distress inks and my water brush to coordinate with the background map. I die cut the layers again from black fun foam, glued them to the backs of the corresponding cardstock die cuts and lined up the layers one atop the other.
A Tim Holtz Game Spinner was coloured with Black alcohol ink as was the ‘truth’ Typed Token. I highlighted the debossed printing on the Typed Token with white Distress Crayon and rubbed it back. The crayon turned pinkish in reaction with the black alcohol ink but that was OK as it coordinated with the pink on the map! I joined the Game Spinner and the Typed Token with a length of silver wire and added a small heart brad coloured with Weathered Wood Distress paint.
The sentiment was printed out onto some cardstock that I coloured with Old Paper Distress paint and backed with a piece of black cardstock.
And then I simply assembled all of the components, here are a few detail pictures of the completed plaque.
Love the shadowing you get by elevating this wonderful chipboard embellishment!
That picture just cracks me up!
This Compass Blueprint stamp is new to me, love the dimension from layering all the die cut components.
I backed the scrapbook paper background with a piece of heavy chipboard covered with black cardstock on the front and a vintage map image on the back. These faux screw head embellishments were the perfect finishing touch.
I die cut a Tim Holtz Small Easel for a stand and adhered it to the back of the plaque over top the vintage map of Canada.
Hope you have enjoyed my tutorial and can envision a way to make this design your own. Although I have made this mixed media piece as a plaque, you could easily incorporate this design into a scrapbook layout, art journal page or card.
You could substitute the vintage photo with a picture of your Dad behind the wheel of the car or of him reading a map or pointing to a road sign … lots of possibilities!
