Destination Vacation Ocean View Card with Deb Riddell

Hello everyone, thanks so much for stopping by.  It’s Deb here today to share a card with you that I made for someone about to head off on an ocean cruise, Destination Vacation!

I used Southern Ridge’s Wavy Film Strip Frame, Mini Ocean Set, Foliage Pieces and Fish Net stencil along with dies and Distress inks from Tim Holtz and embossing powder from Emerald Creek Craft Supplies.  I’ve some step out photos on how I made my card, read on for the how to.

I started out with a 5 ½” square piece of 110 lb white cardstock and coloured it with Distress inks in Salty Ocean, Mermaid Lagoon and Broken China using Tim Holtz’s wrinkle free distress method and spritz and flick with water.  I made a ‘wave’ stencil from some acrylic packaging and stenciled in my waves with the same three Distress ink colours.

More stenciling followed with Southern Ridge’s Fish Net stencil using Frayed Burlap and Salty Ocean Distress inks.  The background was looking a bit dark so I sealed it with Matte Distress Collage medium and added a wash of diluted white acrylic paint to lighten it up (not shown, sorry I forgot to take a picture of that step!)

The Mini Ocean Set only has three little sea creatures in it, so I cut the Wavy Film Strip Frame in two to give me three frame segments to showcase the critters (and also to make sure it fit on my background!)

I painted the frame segment with Americana Lamp Black paint and then embossed it with Fractured Ice embossing powder from Emerald Creek Craft Supplies.

Four Foliage Pieces were base coated with Americana Avocado paint and then stippled with Light Avocado and Jade Green paint before being embossed with more Fractured Ice embossing powder.  I love this embossing powder, it totally changes appearance depending upon the colour that you are embossing it over, magic!

The dolphin, starfish and seahorse from the Mini Ocean Set were sprayed with Black Soot Distress Spray stain and then clear embossed.

I then decided it was high time I started to use up some of the bits and bobs of paper from previous projects that I have saved up (aka hoarded!) so I gathered together an assemblage of green papers and die cut some ‘seaweed’ using Tim Holtz’s Mini Holiday Greens dies.

I also have a VERY large number of left over die cut letters in my stash so I layered up four of each letter to spell out ‘destination vacation’ (I do believe that these letters had been die cut with Tim Holtz’s Alpha Numeric ¾” dies).  I didn’t care what colour they were as I ended up painting the letters with some Ceramcoat Chambray Blue acrylic paint after gluing them together with a Zig glue pen.

And then it was time to assemble the card.  I cut a card blank from tan cardstock (sort of a sand colour to go along with my ocean theme) and adhered the stenciled background to the front.  The die cut ‘seaweed’ was glued to the background and the Wavy Film Strip Frame segment adhered overtop of the die cuts.  The little sea critters were adhered into the center of each film strip frame, I popped each of them up on a wee piece of black fun foam for some dimension.

The embossed Foliage Pieces were also popped up on some black fun foam and adhered on top of the Wavy Film Strip Frame.

The layered and painted die cut letters were then adhered above and below the film strip, following the wavy contour of the frame.

And as a final step, I printed out a sentiment for the inside of the card using some digital scrapbook images courtesy of HGD by Laurie Ann.  I changed the colouring of the Bon Voyage sentiment and of the cruise ship image in my Paint.net program to blue to coordinate with my design.

I hope that you’ve enjoyed seeing my Destination Vacation Ocean View card.  Although I used these Southern Ridge chipboard pieces to make a card, you could very easily adapt my design for a scrapbooking layout to showcase your summer vacation seaside memories.
