Thankful For Fall Mixed Media Plaque with Deb Riddell

Hello and thank you for stopping by, it’s Deb Riddell here today to share a mixed media home decor plaque I created for fall.

I used Southern Ridge’s Bare Branches, Pumpkin Leaves, Fall Leaves and Maple Branch chipboard, read on for the how to.

I started out with a piece of Distress Mixed Media Heavystock cut to 6” x 6” and spritzed it with Antique Linen and Tea Dye Distress Spray Stain.  A wash of Picket Fence Distress Stain followed and once dry I used my Tim Holtz Spritzer to add some Forest Moss and Bundled Sage Distress Marker sprays.

The Aspen Trees 6” x 6” stencil from The Crafter’s Workshop was centered overtop and inked through with Stormy Sky, Hickory Smoke and a touch of Salty Ocean Distress inks.

A bit of Pumice Stone Distress Stain was mixed into Ranger Matte Opaque texture paste to tint it and then the edges of the cardstock were stenciled with the tinted paste through the Burlap layering stencil.

Once the texture paste had dried, the whole piece was sealed with Matte Distress Collage medium.  The outside edges were inked with Ground Espresso Distress Archival ink and the inside edge of the texture paste frame was shaded with Forest Moss and Vintage Photo Distress markers.  A piece of rust coloured cardstock was cut to 6 ½” by 6 ½” and a piece of blue hued cardstock from Tim’s Destinations Paper Stash was cut to 7” by 7” and all of the layers adhered together with Therm O Web’s iCraft ½” Adhesive tape.

An assortment of leaves (Pumpkin Leaves, Fall Leaves and some leaves snipped off of the Maple Branch) were coloured with multiple layers of acrylic paint and Distress stains in fall colours.  I did indeed use all of the paint and stain colours pictured below plus a couple of others not shown (gesso and Distress Oxides) and let me tell you that this chipboard stands up to a whole bunch of abuse and still looks wonderful!

The middle sized piece from the Bare Branches set was inked with Frayed Burlap Distress Stain.  The word ‘fall’ was die cut with Tim Holtz’s Broadway XL die, inked with Ground Espresso Distress Stain and then another set of letters were die cut from black fun foam and the two layered together.

A spray of Tim Holtz’s Bouquet Findings flowers were inked with Antique Linen Distress Spray Stain and bound together with a length of jute twine that had been inked with Gathered Twigs Distress Stain.

I chose the phrase ‘be thankful’ from Tim Holtz’s Clippings Stickers to add to my plaque, seemed appropriate for this time of year with Canadian Thanksgiving coming up in a few weeks time.

The word ‘fall’ was added down the right side and I let the letters kind of flutter down the plaque like falling leaves.

The Bouquet Findings flowers and the Clippings sticker phrase were added to the bottom left corner, I outlined the Clipping sticker with some Ground Espresso Distress marker.

And finally the rest of the leaves were added to the center of the plaque.

I hope that you have enjoyed seeing how my Thankful For Fall mixed media plaque came together and that you’ve been inspired to make one for yourself to decorate your home this fall.
