Jane Austen Card with Corina Finley

Hello Fellow Crafters!

This card all started three days ago when I cleaned up a spill of coffee I had on my studio counter with paper towel, was distracted by my boys and forgot to throw it in the garbage can.

Today, when I came in to create my DT project with no ideas, I found myself cleaning up! Procrastinating! Then I grabbed the dried up ball of coffee tinted paper towel..............ding, ding, ding!

I gently smoothed out the paper towel, and loved the look and texture. I decided to use it as I would use cardstock in my card. I collected a few Jane Austen Kit images that I purchased from Calico Collage and layered each to the paper towel and brown cardstock. I added stitching detail around the perimeter with my sewing machine.

I applied a thin coat of Antique Bronze Distress Paint to the Delicate Lace Element. Once it was dry, I added multi medium to a few places and sprinkled with Crushed Glass Glitter.

I placed the Delicate Lace Element to the left side of the card front, atop of a scrap of Tea-Dyed Cheesecloth. I glued the Vintage Pocket Watch to the sentiment of Jane Austen's quote and added the Mini Wood Key to the top right.

Captured Scrapbook Layout with Charlene Byrd

Hello Bloggers!

Charlene here! Thanks for joining me today! My hubby and I just returned from an amazing trip to Mexico with 2 of our very dear friends.  I love travelling in April (well actually I just love travelling anytime) but I love it because when I return home I know that spring is right around the corner! You may still need hats and mittens for those cool spring days but the warmth is right around the corner.

This is my adorable niece Renna. She is the sweetest little girl with the biggest, brightest smile and the most adorable curls! She definitely makes the life more beautiful just by being in it!
For this layout I used Southern Ridge Queen Anne’s Drop Doily.  The package comes with 4 chipboard pieces so I used 2 of them to decorate, balance and anchor the left side of my layout. I love this page because you can quickly put it together using some of your paper scraps, a bit of lace, add some beautiful chipboard pieces and voila…perfection!

Love Heart & Soul Mixed Media Canvas with Deb Riddell

Hello everyone, thank you for stopping by.  It’s Deb here today to share a mixed media canvas with you that I made using Southern Ridge’s Mare and Foal, Taneesha Heart and Heart Filigree Border chipboard pieces and Heart stencil.

This canvas would be a lovely gift for any Mom on Mother’s Day and all the horse lovers in your life would appreciate it too I think.  I’ve a few step out photos for you on how I created it, hope you will enjoy seeing them.

I started out with 6” x 8” flat artists canvas and added the word ‘love’ to the left side before coating it with gesso.  The letters for the word love were die cut with Tim Holtz’s Alpha Numeric ¾” dies, I layered four of each letter together for some dimension.

I then stenciled some hearts here and there onto the canvas through Southern Ridge’s Heart stencil with Ranger Opaque Texture paste.

After the texture paste dried, I added repeated washes of DecoArt Media fluid acrylics in Cobalt Turquoise Hue and Green Gold, spritzing with water for some drips and runs and drying in between.  A final wash of Golden Titan Buff and DecoArt Media Titanium White was followed with stamping with a fine script stamp and Distress Vintage Photo Archival ink and some spatters of diluted Titanium white.

The canvas was then given a coat of Distress Vintage Collage medium and the edges shaded with Vintage Photo and Walnut Stain Distress crayons.

The Mare and Foal chipboard pieces were painted with Distress Brushed Corduroy paint.

The horses were then stenciled with the Flourish layering stencil and Gloss Transparent Texture paste.  Once the paste had dried, the horses were coloured with Gathered Twigs Distress ink and the ink was rubbed off of the gloss texture medium with a soft cloth. I ended up darkening the horses slightly with some Walnut Stain Distress ink in the same manner before adding them to the canvas.

The Taneesha Heart and Heart Filigree Border were painted with Brushed Corduroy Distress paint and then stamped with Tim Holtz’s Ledger Script stamp and Distress Vintage Photo Archival ink.  They were given a coat of satin varnish and slightly shaded with Walnut Stain Distress crayon.

And finally, one of Tim Holtz’s Quote Chips was coloured with Old Paper and Shabby Shutters Distress crayons and edged with Walnut Stain crayon.

To assemble the canvas, the Taneesha Heart and Heart Filigree Border were centered top and bottom.

And the Quote Chip adhered to the right side of the canvas.

The Mare and Foal chipboard pieces were popped up on some small pieces of black fun foam and adhered overtop of the Taneesha Heart, perched on top of the Heart Filigree Border.

You can see the dimension in the picture below and also see some of the sheen from the gloss texture paste embossing on the horses.

I hope that you’ve enjoyed seeing my Love Heart & Soul mixed media canvas, I had a lot of fun creating it to share with you!

Koi & Calm with Sandy McTier

Hi Y'all!

Don’t you just love it when a product YELLS at you and tells you what it wants you to make with it?? When I saw the Southern Ridge Trading Company Intersecting Circles, I immediately thought, “Koi Swimming in Water!” Ta-da! I love how the stencil design gives the water movement without being the typical pattern of water lines per se.

My palette inspiration came from the idea I “heard” loud and clear from the stencil... blues, oranges and white. The prep was done with DecoArt Americana acrylic and then I used DecoArt Media products for the rest. I love the transparency of the Media Fluid Acrylics and the look that can be achieved when the colours are layered.

Surface: I picked this surface (AdornIt) up at the Creative Painting Convention in Las Vegas  last month and thought the shape was perfect for the design. I sealed the surface, let it dry and gave it a light sanding.

I painted the surface with Titanium White, let it dry and then stenciled the SRTC Intersecting Circles on using a stencil brush and Cobalt Turquoise Hue. It was just shy of covering the entire surface so I had to move the stencil over just a bit and finish stenciling the right side. The colour was a bit too much, and I wanted to push the colour down a bit, so I gave it a wash of gesso. I brushed the watery gesso over the entire surface and then wiped it off with a paper towel.

I sketched out my design and then base coated the koi in with gesso. This gives you a great base to start from and takes away the stenciled design/colour on the area you are trying to paint. I ended up applying two layers of gesso, letting it dry in between each layer. Next, I painted the koi with Titan Buff and then started sketching out the areas of colour with my paint brush loaded with Vermillion, Quinacridone Magenta and Quinacridone Gold. I added some Titan Buff and Titanium White spots here and there and dry brushed on some darker spots with Paynes Gray. Using a Wave brush by Dynasty made painting fins so easy! I finished the koi by painting on the eyes, adding some shading with Quinacridone Gold and Raw Umber and finally, adding some highlights with Titan Buff and Titanium White.

I wanted to add a word and some swirls of water over the koi but was afraid I would mess up my design. So, I painted on a thin layer of Matte Medium and let it dry. This adds a protective layer so that you can remove something that you might not like or are 100% pleased with.  I added some bubbles using a stencil and then added swirls with a stencil brush loaded with Translucent White and Cobalt Turquoise Hue. Next, I stenciled on the word ‘CALM’ with Paynes Gray and then slightly moved it to the right and re-stenciled it again with Cobalt Turquoise Hue and a touch of Titanium White. I love this easy way to give the letters a shadow. I painted a few highlights of Titanium White on the letters which helped lighten them up a bit too. Then I added some splatters of Cobalt Turquoise Hue and Titanium White here and there. After everything dried, I used my index finger loaded with a touch of Paynes Gray to darken up the edge of the surface just a bit. Once everything was dry, I sealed the project with DecoArt Soft Touch Varnish.  The pattern packet will be available on my website soon, so make sure to get that stencil ordered from www.chipboard.ca. I would also recommend getting the smaller one while you’re at it – it’s equally as awesome!

I hope this inspires you to listen to any products that puts a creative design or layout in your mind - then run with it!!J
